I really don’t know what to say. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this amazing turn of events (that I never thought would actually happen) possible. I know that the words “hope” and “change” have been thrown around pretty liberally by both sides in the past few weeks, but I really hope that this is a sign that the insanity of the past few years is slowly coming to an end.
Proposition 8 and its sister propositions in several other states passed, and I think that’s unfortunate, but expected. It shows, I think, that Americans cannot cleanly separate their politics from their religion. I’m sure there will be counter-propositions and counter-counter-propositions ad infinitum until someone decides to amend the Constitution. We’ll just have to wait and see.
I congratulate President-Elect Obama (that’s still sort of surprising to be able to say, isn’t it?) on his well-earned and decisive victory. Now comes the time when you make good on the promises that got you elected. Please don’t let us down.
Update: I don’t want that “cleanly separate politics from religion” bit to be construed as a slight to religion or the religious. I totally understand how deeply religious people must have been of two minds about this issue, and what I meant by that statement was that people can’t vote on something like gay marriage without being influenced by factors like their religious convictions and that this is exactly why this issue will continue to oscillate forever until some decision is made at the national level.
Attacking religious people because you’re against Prop. 8 is just as bad, in my opinion, as attacking non-religious people because you’re for Prop. 8, and I apologize if my remarks were in any way misconstrued.

Karl Rove has resigned, and CNN has proven (without even trying) that he truly is a font of unending malevolence.
And I quote:
When asked for his reaction to those who say he’s being “run out of town,” Rove responded, “That sounds like the rooster claiming to have called up the sun.”
So wait, you’re comparing yourself to … the sun? Way to be humble there, Karl.
Another quote from CNN’s article, my favorite:
Rove said the first thing he plans to do after leaving the White House is “go dove hunting in West Texas …
“So Karl, what are you going to do now?”
“Why, I’m going to do what any decent, red-blooded American neocon would do! I’m going to shoot the bejeezus out of the Christian symbol of peace and tranquility with a high-powered rifle, that’s what I’m going to do!”
If he doesn’t leave the press conference this morning by transmogrifying into a swarm of bats and flying away, I’m going to be sorely disappointed.
Holy crap.
I think w00t is the only word needed here.
Well, Arnold is still governator, but we finally got the House back. Hopefully this is the beginning of two years of bipartisan cooperation and moderation. I just hope newly-elected Democrats don’t waste their time getting some sort of political revenge; maybe now that both sides have some control, someone will be able to stand up to the administration.
Missed the Senate by thaaaat much though. Darn.
If the Dems don’t get the house after elections tomorrow I’m seriously going to shoot some puppies. Cute ones too. The puppies will not be able to stop my maniacal rampage.
If you value the puppies and are a Democrat, get off your ass and vote. Hell, even if you aren’t a Democrat and you’re fed up with the hypocrisy and bullshit, we’d love to have you. Show the world that, despite all evidence to the contrary, the Democratic party isn’t a bunch of sissies and we really can win an election even if it’s handed to us on a plate.
It’s time for some checks and balances to be checked and balanced.
So the Supreme Court ruled against Grokster today … the good news is that their ruling is, shall we say, open to interpretation.
Ahem, “One who distributes a device with the object of promoting its use to infringe copyright … is liable for the resulting acts of infringement by third parties using the device, regardless of the device’s lawful uses…”
So yes, Hollywood and the recording industry will use this ruling to attempt to sue all these various P2P firms. So what? They’ve been doing that for five years. Now luckily, we the software community can get around this by just not promoting it for anything. It’s a peer-to-peer networking application. Done. What can you do with it? Hell, I don’t know. You can make toast with it for all I care.
I’m going to bet that absolutely zero will change from this ruling … I mean, we expected it all along, didn’t we? The Supreme Court is kinda … well, old school.
Ah, election season. That magical time of year when the politicians emerge from the deepest depths of the netherworld with enormous signs under arm and endless literature in hand to torment the student population at large. It’s the moooost wonderful tiiiiime … of the yeeeear.
Sorry, political people, but I really don’t like student politics. Some good friends of mine are big into politics because they want to help people and make things better, and that’s just great, but it’s my opinion that the vast majority of people running for student office are in it for their own personal advancement and nothing else. Anybody who knows me well enough is pretty aware that I’ve never really held much respect for the vast, clunking machinations of campus politics, and this year is certainly no exception. The student newspaper’s accounts of the day-to-day drama of the ASUC read like a bad soap opera. They start conducting business like adults and I start giving a damn, plain and simple. As far as I’m concerned, the entire election process is a massive popularity contest. This time around even my attempts at The Walk (hands in pockets, looking straight ahead at nothing in particular, walking like you need to be somewhere pretty damn soon) have failed to deflect the sign-wielding minions a few times. Guys, I know your job sucks and that you’re probably being forced to do it, but when I look like I don’t want to be bothered, that probably means I don’t want to be bothered. That pretty much concludes my rant on that subject.
So, the E190 qualifying exam went (but I think I dropped my eraser in Sibley. Crap!) and now it’s over with. Barring any unforeseen calamity I’ll be deemed competent and I can enroll. Now the problem is actually getting into the class. Curse you, impacted courses!
I feel like I’m dragging this out. I’ll post more later if I feel like it … so much to do, so little time to do it in. Augh.
